While poker is a competitive game, the poker community itself is a tight one, which is why it always hits us hard when we hear of legendary poker players passing away. And it is especially sad when the players in question are of a young age.
It was recently reported that Dan Sewnig, a renowned poker player from New Jersey, US, passed away at the age of 33. To pay tribute to this marvelous player who left an imprint on the poker industry, let's take a look at Sewing's achievements and remember him for the great person he was.
Dan Sewnig's Story & Poker Career
Sewnig learned poker from his cousin when he was only 11, and he played $5 sit-and-go games with fellow students to practice the game he loved. He went to the Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he graduated with a degree in math and a concentration in education.
Like many poker players these days, Sewnig led the life of a Marvel superhero. Licensed teacher by day and an avid poker player by night, he poured his heart into becoming a better player and making connections within the poker community, which is how he managed to leave such a great impact on his surroundings.
Known mostly for his success in the online poker circuits, Daniel Sewnig made a name for himself as "mj23style" and "RedsoxNets5". According to online reports, his online poker wins surpass the $1,000,000 mark, which includes two wins at the WSOP Online Circuit ring events that he won in 2022 and 2023.
When it comes to live wins, however, Sewnig amassed a modest amount of $369,433 throughout his career. His biggest achievement at live events was probably landing 79th place in a 2021 WSOP event when he scored $81,000 – the highest live win he ever got.
His success over the years made him one of the best online poker players in New Jersey, which his fans and fellow players couldn't ignore when paying their respects. After numerous rumors of his sudden passing were confirmed by an official obituary posted by the family, many poker players were quick to share their thoughts on the tragic news.
Remembered by the Poker Community
His friend and poker player Mike "gags30poker" Gagliano said on August 17: "I’m deeply saddened to share the news that Dan @RedsoxNets5 Sewnig passed away earlier this week. He was a tremendous part of the NJ poker community since its inception and will be profoundly missed."
Many other players also took a moment to pay respects to the beloved poker pro. Asher Conniff called Sewnig "one of the nicest guys you could ever meet," while Jeff Platt said "…Never had the pleasure of meeting in person but we’d played online (who hasn’t gotten crushed by Dan) and exchanged some messages. Seemed like the nicest guy" and Matt Paoletti agreed he "brought a lot of positivity to many people."
